The LaLiga president participated in the third edition of the ISDE Sports Convention, held in May in Madrid, world sport capital.

On 15th February, at ISDE Madrid, the presentation of the third ISDE Sports Convention took place in which Javier Tebas participated in the round table ‘Football: Current trends in law and sports management’ alongside the coordinator of the book of the same name, Felipe Toranzo, Managing Partner at FT Executive Search and Juan de Dios Crespo, CEO of RH&C Sports Lawyers, co-authors of the book. The roundtable was moderated by Gaspar Díez, editor-in-chief of Sports of Europa Press.

Javier Tebas warned that if the Spanish league wants to “compete”, it must grow internationally, an objective that La Liga Impulso will achieve with the creation of, among other measures, club academies around the world.

The President of La Liga will participate on 15th February, at 18.00 at ISDE Madrid, in an event in which details of the next ISC will be provided.

The President of La Liga, Javier Tebas, and CEO of ISDE, Juan José Sánchez Puig, will preside over this presentation of the third edition of the ISDE Sports Convention (ISC) 2022, the international congress on the law and industry of sports, that will take place in Madrid this May.

Javier Tebas and Juan José Sánchez Puig will provide advance notice of some details of the leading sports law congress to be held in Madrid in 2022, which will coincide with Madrid being the World Capital of Sport.

Afterwards, the president of LaLiga will participate in the round table discussion entitled ‘Football: Current Aspects of Law and Sports Management’, together with the lawyers Juan de Dios Crespo, Manuel Quintanar and Felipe Toranzo, authors and coordinator of the book of the same name.

This will mark the launch of the third edition of ISC 2022, the first international congress on sports law and the sports industry organised by a university academic institution, ISDE, in collaboration with LaLiga and the Madrid City Council.

The ISC 2022, organised in hybrid mode, in-person and streaming, as a leading international congress in the law and industry of sport, will address the challenges of the present and the near future, all of which have been accentuated by the pandemic crisis, such as globalisation, digital transformation, the promotion of women’s sport, and sustainability.

FIFA’s Director of Legal and Compliance, Emilio García Silvero, from Spain, warned that football is the sport that was most involved in match-fixing cases between 2008 and 2020, with almost 70 percent of such cases relating to the sport, at the ISC Webinar, the digital meeting promoted by the Instituto Superior de Derecho y Economía (ISDE) held on Thursday as part of the ISDE Sports Convention (ISC) activities.

FIFA’s chief legal and compliance officer warned that of the 45-55 cases that the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has analysed on match-fixing in the period 2008 to 2020, almost all, 68 per cent, are in football, and 18 per cent in tennis.

Under the title ‘Football and match-fixing: CAS case law and court rulings in Spain’ and moderated by the Assistant Director of Iusport, Irene Aguiar, the lawyer from LA Coruña and ISDE professor referred in his talk, among other things, to the sporting and criminal consequences of investigations such as the Levante-Zaragoza or the ‘Osasuna case’

The Director of Legal and Compliance of FIFA, Emilio García Silvero, from Spain, will examine the latest court rulings in Spain on alleged football match-fixing at the ISC Webinar, the digital meeting promoted by ISDE and held this Thursday (20:00) as part of the ISDE Sports Convention (ISC).

Under the title ‘Football and match-fixing: CAS jurisprudence and judicial resolutions in Spain’ and moderated by the Assistant Director of Iusport, Irene Aguiar, the lawyer from A Coruña and ISDE professor will discuss, among other subjects, the sporting and criminal consequences of cases such as that of Osasuna, which resulted in the first prison sentence for sporting corruption in Spain.

Holding a PhD and Master’s in Sports Law from the University of Lérida and in Sports Governance from the Science Po University in Paris, between 2004 and 2012 García Silvero served as Head of Legal Services at the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF).

The Head of Compliance and Internal Control at La Liga, Esperanza Bernal-Quirós, and the lawyer Ángel Chavarría will discuss the Challenges of Compliance in sport at the next ISDE Webinar, the digital meeting promoted by the Instituto Superior de Derecho y Economía (ISDE) to be held this Thursday (20:00) as part of the activities of the ISDE Sports Convention (ISC).

Under the title ‘Challenges of Compliance in the sports environment’, the talk will be moderated by Alberto Palomar, Partner at Broseta Lawyers; Administrative Judge; Director of the International Research Centre of ISDE; and professor of the International Master’s in Law and Sports Management ISDE-KPMG, IUSPORT and Unidad Editorial; and the Master’s in Law and Sports Management ISDE-Club Estudiantes.

Since her hiring as Head of Compliance and Internal Control at LaLiga in May 2015, Esperanza Bernal-Quirós, a Law graduate from the Universidad San Pablo CEU, has promoted the Regulatory Compliance Body of the Clubs’ Employers’ Association and the Compliance and Internal Control area responsible for the implementation and supervision of the Compliance Management System, the Internal Control model, Data Protection – with the figure of the Data Protection Delegate -, and the Information Security Office.

Lawyer Juan de Dios Crespo stressed the importance of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) remaining “independent” in the future and reflected on the challenges facing sports arbitration in the face of the COVID-19 health and economic crisis, at the ISDE Webinar, the digital meeting promoted by the Instituto Superior de Derecho y Economía (ISDE) as part of the activities of the ISDE Sports Convention (ISC).

Under the title ‘Sports arbitration in times of COVID: TAS & BAT’, Juan de Dios Crespo analysed the consequences that the pandemic has brought to sport, such as salary cuts and the extension of contracts beyond 30th June in order to finish professional football leagues.

“The reduction in players’ salaries caused by the pandemic will depend on each country and its national laws, and on each footballer,” said the lawyer from the Ruiz Huerta&Crespo law firm, who went on to explain how the International Football Federation (FIFA) has clarified the emergency measures dictated during the most critical phase of the pandemic in a new guide published in June..

The lawyer Juan de Dios Crespo will give an insight into sports arbitration in the current context of the health and economic crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, at the next ISDE Webinar promoted by the Instituto Superior de Derecho y Economía (ISDE) to be held this Thursday (20:00) and within the activities of the ISDE Sports Convention (ISC).

Under the title ‘Sports arbitration in times of COVID: CAS & BAT’, the online talk will be moderated by José Carlos Oliveira, student of the Master’s in International Sports Law of ISDE and Legal Advisor of Sporting Club, Portugal. In it, Juan de Dios Crespo will review the legal challenges posed by coronavirus in sports arbitration and the legal consequences that have come about as a result of the postponement or cancellation of major sporting events.

A lawyer since 1985, Partner of the law firm Ruiz Huerta & Crespo, and holder of numerous diplomas in sports, community and international law, Crespo was President of the Sports Law Section of the Valencia Bar Association from 2000 to 2012 and again from 2019.

The Heads of As.com and Marca.com, Luis Nieto and Emilio Contreras, and the Assistant Director of the legal portal IUSPORT, Irene Aguiar, will analyse the challenges of sports journalism in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic, at the next ISDE Webinar, the online talk promoted by the Instituto Superior de Derecho y Economía (ISDE) which will be held this Thursday (20:00) as part of the ISDE Sports Convention (ISC).

Under the title ‘The challenge of sports journalism in times of COVID-19’, the three experts will present their personal view on the future of the media sector, which has had to accelerate teleworking and digitisation to adapt to the reality marked by the health and economic crisis of coronavirus.

Irene Aguiar is Deputy Director of IUSPORT, a portal specialising in sports law, of which she has been a member since 2010, and where she is also a columnist. A Legal Advisor specialising in sports law for sports clubs, athletes and federations, she holds a degree in Business Administration and Management and Law from the Universidad Rey Juan Carlos and a Master’s Degree in Sports Law and Management from ISDE.

Brazilian lawyer Luis Fernando Pamplona Novaes has advocated for planning and expert advice for professional athletes, to avoid such athletes having problems with the tax authorities, at the ISDE Webinar, the online talk promoted by the Instituto Superior de Derecho y Economía (ISDE) held as part of the ISDE Sports Convention (ISC).

The co-director of ISDE’s Master’s in International Sports Law and Partner at Nemetz & Kuhnen Advocacia highlighted the increased tax pressure in recent years on sports stars, such as Manchester United’s Cristiano Ronaldo, Paris Saint Germain’s Neymar Jr and Paris Saint Germain’s Leo Messi, who have all been summoned to testify in court for alleged fraud in their respective tax returns.

In this regard, Luis Pamplona Novaes recalled that this phenomenon “is not new” because in the past there have been “catastrophic cases” of sportsmen who had financial and tax problems, such as the former Dutch player and coach Johan Cruyff, the architect of the Dream Team; the Argentine footballer Diego Armando Maradona; the boxer Mike Tyson; and the tennis player Andre Agassi in the United States.
